Normally it’s at this point of the week that we ballyhoo one particular innovation. However, this week we are particularly excited over news from the world of photography that might enhance your travels.
Yes, it was indeed all about something new and something classic in regards to upcoming
additions to the Leica and Olympus family respectively.
First, we examine an expensive line of cameras that just decided to include a waterproof warrior into the mix.
As the Instagram caption reads, this is a Leica camera you can take just about anywhere: “Sand? Water? This #camera resists: Explore endless opportunities with the #brandnew #elementsproof #LeicaXU.”
The above link takes you to the camera’s page, which boasts of some nice details. The X-U is shockproof up to 1.22 meters and waterproof up to 15 meters at about an hour of exposure.
As Leica states: “Shockproof and dust-sealed, it defies all the elements and even takes short falls in its stride.”

This being Leica, you are going to pay a nice premium for quality and style. Wired puts the price at about $3,000.
As Wired continues, this is hardly the ultimate in photographic precision: “Don’t expect a full-frame sensor or the ability to swap in M-mount glass, but the X-U’s specs are pretty great for a subaquatic shooter. It’s built around a 16.5-megapixel APS-C sensor, and its non-swappable lens has a fixed focal length of 23mm (that’s a 35mm equivalent focal length due to the camera’s 1.5x crop factor).”
However, you are still getting a brilliant tool for those excursions that might yield sand, snow or a deluge of water.
