The Speaking Homework assignment described in this paper is perceived by the majority
of students to whom it is assigned to be an enjoyable, anxiety-reducing language experience
encouraging the development of oral fluency in English and the use of explicitly-taught
communication strategies. The instructors involved in this SH research have found positive
motivational and fluency effects in their students through the use of this assignment. This confirms
findings by research in language acquisition indicating that favorable learner perceptions of
assignment efficacy can lead to such effects. Details of the practical implementation of the
assignment require further refinement, with revision of the reflection stage of the assignment
and the recording of conversations being considered.
