In contrast to reuse and recycling
schemes, waste reduction measures are
appropriate to more selected situations
within the food supply and distribution
system. They are often costly and
complex to implement on a wide scale
and require concerted effort over many
years. They are, therefore, more
appropriate to large individual waste
generators or those producing wastes
which are harmful or difficult to
manage. In such cases waste reduction
efforts can be targeted where they will
have the greatest impact. One of the
main opportunities for reducing waste
from food is in limiting the extent to
which solid wastes are mixed with
water, especially in food processing
facilities, abattoirs and stock farms.
This can greatly reduce the difficulty of
managing the waste effectively and can be targeted at a relatively small number
of generators.
