ARTHUR is a highly mobile, medium range weapon locating system (WLS). Its main components are the weapon locating radar (WLR), the shelter, communication equipment and the navigation unit. The system is installed in an ISO-cornered shelter that can be carried by any cross-country truck with a 5 ton payload.
The functional principle of the ARTHUR WLS is to search for projectiles along the horizon and to track detected targets for a few seconds. A number of targets can be tracked simultaneously while search continues. After tracking, the trajectory is calculated and the launching position and impact area are determined. Data on located batteries and impact points are then transmitted to the artillery C2 centre. Comprehensive tactical functions aid the operators in selecting targets for counterfire.
The ARTHUR WLS also provides fire control (FC) for own artillery. In this mode, projectiles are tracked through the final part of their trajectory and the impact point is determined. FC and weapon locating can be carried out simultaneously in different sub-sectors.
