of drinking water, antenatal care and anaemic status of
mothers. Although most household members of children
included in the analysis here had access to drinking water
from a tap, hand pump or covered well, a significant 22%
used unsafe sources and thus unprotected water. A similar
proportion of mothers (20%) suffered from iron deficient
anaemia at the time of survey. There is also a substantial
proportion of women who did not use antenatal care: the
mothers of 35% of children included in the analysis had not
used any antenatal services. It is interesting to note that the
proportions not having access to safe drinking water, not
having used antenatal care services, and having suffered
from anaemia (Table 1) were very similar to the proportion
of children who were under weight at birth (27%).
