The systemic nomenclature of fatty acids is derived from the name of its parent hydrocarbon by replacing its final e by
oleic acid. Thus the names of saturated fatty acids end with the suffix anoic acid and those of unsaturated fatty
acids with the suffix enoic acid. The numbering of carbon atoms in fatty acids is started at the carboxyl
terminus and end methyl carbon is known as omega carbon atom (Figs. 4 and 5).
