The anuran family Dicroglossidae Anderson, 1871 is represented by 60 species under 13 genera in India (Dinesh et al. 2015). In the Western Ghats, there are 25 species belonging to 5 genera Euphlyctis Fitzinger, 1843; Hoplobatrachus Peters, 1863; Minervarya Dubois, Ohler, and Biju, 2001; Sphaerotheca Günther, 1859 and Zakerana Howlader, 2011 (Frost, 2015). The genus Sphaerotheca is represented by four species, wherein the type localities for two species (Sphaerotheca dobsonii and S. leucorhynchus) are from Peninsular India/Western Ghats and the type localities for the other two species (Sphaerotheca breviceps and S. rolandae) are outside the Western Ghats (Frost, 2015). In the Western Ghats, the genus Zakerana is represented by 14 species (Dinesh et al. 2015), with all the species having their type localities in the Western Ghats except Zakerana brevipalmata, which has a doubtful type locality (Frost, 2015). There is considerable confusion regarding the taxonomic and systematic status of the genera Euphlyctis, Hoplobatrachus, Sphaerotheca, Minervarya and Zakerana; historically most members of these genera were described under the then genus Rana, and the distribution range for most dicroglossid species is still not clear.
