The results of this research show that teaching reading using SQ4R can improve reading comprehension of the eleventh grade of SMA Islam 1 Surakarta in the academic year 2010/2011. There are two categories of the improvements in teaching reading comprehension. Those are the improvements of students’ competence and classroom situation.
The improvement of students’ competence can be seen from the result of the test. The students’ mean score increase from 42.67 in pre-test to 44.11 in post-test 1 to 64.22 in post-test 2.
