The hypothesis that there is no significant difference between two treatments (that is, between two methods, tools, techniques, environments, or other conditions whose effects you are measuring (such as productivity, quality, or cost). The null hypothesis is assumed to be true unless the data indicates otherwise [Fenton&Pfleeger 1996].
