JULIE
I heard this sound.
Crickets.
What?
JIM
JULIE
JIM
You heard crickets. Or something
like them. I suppose they have
crickets or something like that
here. You heard insects.
Jim is still clearly blaming Julie for their predicament.
59
EXT. ROAD
...then it begins to pour rain.
We see two silhouetted figures walking in a uniform pace.
Jim and Julie walk along the road.
There is no traffic.
They walk in silence.
JIM
A truck. I hear a truck.
Jim positions himself by the side of the road waving his arms
as a large commercial truck, loaded with stuff, comes
barreling down the road.
Jim puts himself in harm’s way to get the driver’s attention.
The driver hits his horn and doesn’t slow down...
...forcing Jim to jump out of the way at the last moment.
Jim picks himself up and brushes himself off.
60
EXT. ROAD. DAY
The two make their way through the driving rain.
Julie collapses.
Jim doesn’t notice at first, keeps walking until he realized
she has fallen behind.
60
59
40.
He rushes to her
JIM
Julie, are you all right?
JULIE
Yes, I don’t feel...
She begins to shiver, then falls unconscious.
Julie!
JIM
Jim drags Julie to the shade of a tree.
Desperate, he tries the phone one more time.
He gets a signal.
Yes!
61
JIM (CONT’D)
EXT. ROADSIDE. COUNTRY.
As Jim tends to Julie, headlights appear down the road.
Jim steps out to flag down the van.
A figure gets out, walks towards Jim.
Jim strains to see, the backlit figure.
It is GoGo.
61
62
INT. GOGO’S VAN
Gogo and Jim load Julie into the back seat of the van.
62
He jumps in next to her, her head propped against the window.
GOGO
The lady not feel good?
JIM
She was fine and then-
(a beat)
I don’t care how, just glad you
did.
GOGO
I from near this place. We go. Not
good here now.
41.
Jim leans back, takes it all in.
Julie opens an eye, looks through the glass.
63
EXT. VAN
63
From Julie’s POV, the forest seems to come alive: strange,
ghostly shapes take form in the darkness, the trees seem to
morph into human-like bodies.
64
INT. VAN
Julie’s shell shocked eye.
JIM (V.O.)
It couldn’t be malaria. It wouldn’t
come on that quick.
(pause)
Unless she was poisoned, those guys
put something in her drink. They
fucking poisoned her!
65
INT. VAN
Gogo turns off the main road.
Jim is alarmed.
GOGO
To the village where I am from. It
is better.
Why are
need to
I don’t
fucking
JIM
you taking us there? We
get back. To civilization.
want to be stuck in the
jungle.
65
64
GOGO
The road not safe at night.
JIM
Bandits? Does Thailand have
bandits?
GOGO
No. But road not safe at night.
This better. Believe me.
42.
66
EXT. GOGO’S VILLAGE
GoGo enters the village.
A village dogs snarls at the van then begins to back away, in
terror.
67
INT. VAN
Gogo parks his van.
Gogo turns to Jim who is holding the sleeping Julie.
GOGO
Everything okay. GoGo take care of
everything. Come.
GoGo opens the side door, carries the collapsed Julie on his
shoulder like a sack of rice, into a hut.
Jim, disoriented, follows.
THE DOGS IN THE VILLAGE BEGIN TO HOWL.
68
EXT. GOGO’S FAMILY HUT
68
67
66
The two men bring her into the house, lay her down on a bed.
A little boy enters.
LITTLE BOY
(in Thai)
Uncle!
69
INT. HUT. BEDROOM
In the adjacent, open room, all the family members are
standing around the bed where Julie WRITHES, DRENCHED IN
FEVERISH SWEAT.
A couple of Gogo’s ‘grandmothers’ look at each other.
Their leathery, wizened faces betray their bleak assessment
of the situation.
GoGo banters with his relatives in Thai.
Jim watches, uncomprehending.
GoGo and his relatives speak in hushed tones.
