Groups of children go from house to house carrying their paper bags. They ring doorbells, and they shout "Trick of Treat!" when someone answers. Almost every housewife makes a special treat to give the children. Some give apples or cookies or candy; some give pennies or small games. If the children don't get a treat, they play a trick like putting soap on the window screens, or taking away the front porch light, or letting the air out of automobiles tires. Usually, though, there is more treating than tricking, and every child returns home with a big bag full of good things to cat.
