Graphene was synthesised from natural graphite powder by a
modied Hummers' method and reduction process reported
previously.21,40 According to the transmission electron microscopy
(TEM, JEM-2010) image of the as-prepared graphene
shown in Fig. 1a, the graphene has a relatively smooth and
planar structure with sharp edges and several large meandering
wrinkles, similar to that obtained by micromechanical
cleavage.41 Fig. 1b displays a high-resolution transmission
electron microscopy (HRTEM) image of the edge of the graphene,
indicating that the few-layer graphene nanosheets consisted
predominantly of 3–5 layers of graphene monolayers,
with a well-known van der Waals thickness of ca. 0.34 nm.10,20
The selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) pattern of the
graphene, shown in the inset of Fig. 1b, shows a clear six-fold
pattern, revealing the graphitic crystalline nature of the graphene.
