In the first section, learners had to find a topic for themselves and
to develop a research question. To aid thinking, a series of sequenced
questions was developed (Fig. 8) to guide learners through the cognitive process of defining their individual research-related areas
of interest. Students were prompted to check their proposed research
question against a checklist of set criteria in the online activity,
with this discussed at a subsequent tutorial organized as a flipped
classroom.
Students were also required to provide written peer feedback on
each other's research questions. Fig. 9 shows the changes made to the
assignment after the AIL integration.
