The thin metal, plastic, or paper plate is then wrapped around the plate cylinder of the press. As the cylinder rotates, it makes
contact with rollers wet water or a similar dampening solution and rollers conveying ink. The dampening solution prevents ink adhering to the non-printing areas of the
plate. The inked image areas are then transferred to a rubber covered blanket cylinder, finally offsetting the image onto the paper as it passes between the blanket
and impression cylinders.
