Having already looked at Buddhism, our main topic of inquiry will be Confucianism and Daoism (also written as Taoism).
Like other religious systems, Confucianism and Daoism have faced challenges in modernity.
For example, during colonial times, Confucianism was seen by many as a feudal, backwards system that was holding people from modern development.
Currently, however, Confucianism is more likely to be praised for its emphasis on education, individual discipline, family life, and group relations—all desirable qualities in an era of rapid modernization.
