Shared governance describes a system in which nurses have organizational autonomy, i.e., control over their practice, and in which nurses have input into "the broader unit and decision-making processes pertaining to patient care" (Hinshaw, 2002, p. 92). This organizational autonomy is distinct from clinical or individual autonomy (Kramer & Schmalenberg, 2002).
