Inoculated Trientalis europaea formed abundant AM structures, but mycorrhiza did not
increase its shoot biomass or the whole plant’s relative growth rate (RGR) (IV). Carex
bigelowii did not form mycorrhiza, but its shoot biomass and RGR were lower in the
inoculated pots. The presence of a competitor had no statistically significant effect on the
shoot biomasses or RGR in either plant species. Mycorrhizal inoculum increased the root/
shoot ratio of C. bigelowii in all competitive situations, while the root/shoot ratio
decreased in T. europaea in the presence of C. bigelowii in both mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal
state.
