I am writing to apply for a teaching position in the subject of Social Studies in the Northern Lehigh School District. I student taught both ninth and eleventh grade at Northeast High School in Philadelphia from September 2009 to April 2010. I graduated as a Master of Science in Education from the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education in May of 2010.
As an urban educator, I have experience meeting the needs of diverse learners. At Northeast, I taught students with a wide variety of learning needs and I dedicated myself to making my lessons accessible to all students. In the School District of Philadelphia, I learned effective teaching methods that focus on improving students’ literacy, creativity and critical thinking skills. I have also received special training in inquiry-based learning from the University of Pennsylvania. I am prepared to teach Social Studies with an emphasis on reading, writing and creating. I am excited about teaching students with diverse learning needs and building a safe and productive classroom environment for everyone.
I have received a number of merit based grants that have allowed me to travel and study in Europe and the Middle East. Through my experiences studying at Cambridge University and in Turkey, in particular, I have gained a solid understanding of current and historical events. These experiences abroad flavor my practice and make it unique. I have screened college essays and processed college applications at the Robert E. Cook Honors College admissions office. I have also served as a peer advisor for the United States Department of Education. I am eager to continue encouraging, advising and preparing students to meet and exceed college admissions standards.
Finally, I am devoted to empowering students to achieve their educational goals of the present and their career and college goals for the future. Please give my application careful consideration.
Thank you for your time and attention. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Virginia M. Bartges, M.S.Ed.
