Why do so many people leave their comfortable lives to go and for in care those need, when many of us would rather ignore what is happening around the world? Bernard Kouchner is one of those people who care. Here is his story. Bernard Kouchner was born in the French city of Avignon in 1939, and he became a medical doctor. In 1968, Kouchner was horrified when he learned about the effects of the famine in Biafra, near Nigeria, and he rushed to assist the people in the area. In 1971 Kouchner co-founded Médecins sans Frontieres(MSF), or Doctors without Borders, an international medical humanitarian organization based in Paris, which provides emergency aid in nearly 70 countries. The organization assists people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, and disasters, and others who lack basic health care because of social circumstances or geographical isolation. The help is given regardless of established national borders, race, religion, creed, or political beliefs.
