Formal Interview or Survey Interview
- Interviewer asks and respondent answers
- Only the respondents reveal feeling and opinions
- Interviewer is nonjudgmental
- Interviewer tries to obtain direct answers
- Interviewer avoids making ritual responses
- Respondent provides almost all information.
- Interviewer controls the topic, direction, and pace.
- Interviewer attempts to maintain a consistently warm
- Respondent should not evade questions and should give truthful answers.
Informal Interview or Ordinary Conversation
-Questions and answers from each participant are equally balanced.
-There is an open exchange of feelings and opinions.
-Judgments are stated made to persuade the other of particular point of view.
-A person can reveal deep inner feelings
-Ritual responses are common (shaking head, How are you? Fine)
-The participants exchange information and correct the factual errors
-Topic rise and fall and either person can introduce new topics.
-The emotional tone can shift from humor, to joy, to sadness, and so on.
Interview bias falls into six categories
1. Error by the respondent
2. Unintentional errors by the interviewer
3. Internal subversion by the interviewer
4. Influence on the respondent’s answers
5. Influence due to the interviewer’s expectations
6. Failure of an interviewer
