(1) We have so far not disclosed the source of the material. As mentioned earlier, this label of ours is a temporary label that does not stay on the car. As a result no OEM insisted on testing or performance evaluations. It was used across multiple customers in the industry and no OEM took ownership of material evaluation. (No OEM Spec) back then since it was initiated by the government.
So far we have not had issues selling a competitor product. The risk is if the source decides to discontinue their material, then we have not alternative. Customers would expect us to provide solution. Also if there is a performance issue with the label, this will come back on 3M. In this case we did not mind since its a temporary label.
I'm sure 3M would have a material somewhat similar. We need to check with the respective division.
(2) We too outsource this since we do not have capability to print more than two colours. We did not update our machinery and felt we could do it cheaper through local outsource.
Our business is small and every conversion opportunity would help. However for TH team you have many other business opportunities. Whether you want to deviate from your core capabilities and go after these none focus business is something you will have to evaluate with your team.
I will send some details of 3M IATD label business team member. Perhaps you may wish to have a review to see if 3M can make an offer.
