There is a limited number of small and medium-sized food companies active in the functional food market as well. These companies mostly product functional products for market niches or offer me-too products following the pioneering products of the multinational companies. Often these products can survive only for a rather short time period. In general, SMEs lack the know-how and resources for own intensive R&D activities and cannot afford to spend high sums in specific information or advertising activities necessary to open a specific segment of the functional food market as pioneering company.
