the upstream and downstream ends of each section (Bardonnet
et al., 2003; Bureau du Colombier et al., 2007a,b). The flume was
filled with water up to a depth of 43 cm. For technical reasons and
in agreement with the high ability of glass eels to withstand salinity
transfers, the behavioural test was carried out in freshwater.Water
temperature was maintained at 11.5 0.5 C and water current at
8 1 cm s1. Two artificial shelter areas (astroturf) of 25 dm2 were
placed in each section.
