Technology and Employment Rates
Fewer jobs, moving jobs
The rapid expansion of both the global economy and new developments in the field of technology have had a negative effect on some fields of employment.
New types of technology have made it possible for some companies to use machines instead of humans to do various jobs such as factory work. While saving companies money, this development has reduced the number of available jobs, especially for those with lower education levels. Moreover, technological developments have also changed global supply routes, creating more job opportunities in some countries and cutting job options in others. In short, there are fewer jobs available overall, and those jobs that are available are concentrated in certain regions of the world.
How governments can help workers succeed
Globalization and the trend toward using technology to replace human workers are not likely to slow down any time soon. Unless political leaders step in to ensure more equal distribution of jobs and wealth, the world economy is in danger of losing balance. However, these developments aren’t entirely bad. In fact, these changes have created a rise in higher-level management jobs. Governments can meet the need for skilled labor by supporting education and training opportunities for unskilled workers who have lost their jobs. In this way, displaced workers may be able to get the qualifications they need to succeed.
Economic and political solutions
Governments can also help balance global employment opportunities by collaborating and communicating with other nations on tax systems, regulations, and trade policies that will help keep manufacturing and trade healthy in all regions of the world.
Of course, even if governments take the problem seriously, there’s no guarantee that taking these steps will make a lasting difference. Nevertheless, even if today’s government leaders are beginning to think about ways to protect people’s futures, it’s a good start.
