In Shinile zone, most of the pastoralists were
moving from place to place in search of feed and
water. Due to this fact, human residences and
shades were not permanent. In Jijiga zone
pastoralists used permanent houses for sheep and
goats around their homestead.
Pastoralists expressed that pregnant
sheep and goats, new born lambs and kids were
housed separately at night but joined the flock in
the morning for grazing. In all cases, the young
stocks were kept in small isolated and protected
shades. Both newborn lambs and the older sheep
and goats were given special treatment. The
present result was in agreement with the survey
results reported by Workneh (1992) and
Alemayehu (1993) for the southeast lowlands
where open pens were used commonly and goats
were protected from cold and hot weather
