zu Chi Foundation turns PET bottles into blankets for poor communities
Millions of blankets and clothes have been distributed to victims of natural disasters inside and outside Taiwan by the Tzu Chi Foundation. Those necessities were not ordinary items but made from textiles converted from garbage.
Kvish Triwongpaisarn, a businessman and a volunteer for Tzu Chi Thailand, said one of the foundation's projects is the recycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles into textiles. The project was started in 2006.
Under the garbage separation plan, volunteers recycle used bottles by cleaning them, removing caps and rings thoroughly and sorting them by plastic category and colour.
Then they collect PET bottles, rinse and shred them, and convert the shreds into polyester resin, which is spun into yarn and woven into cloth.
Other items made with recycled resins are thermal underwear, T-shirts, hospital bed sheets, medical gowns and uniforms for Tzu Chi volunteers.
All the clothes from the foundation are donated to impoverished persons and are not for sale.
Tzu Chi works towards environmentally-friendly goals and encourages the recycling of items such as water bottles, and encourages the use of reusable items or the reuse of items to reduce waste.
Besides plastic bottles, the volunteers also collect and categorise other kinds of rubbish. They are sent for sale and the proceeds go to the foundation.
"Turn trash into gold, gold into love, love into a purifying force and surround the globe with it," as goes the motto of Tzu Chi.
"The organisation was founded by Dhamma Master Cheng Yen. She was inspired by her master and mentor the late venerable master Yin Shun, a significant proponent of Humanistic Buddhism, who exhorted her to 'work for Buddhism and for all sentient beings'," Kvish said.
One day in 1990 Cheng Yen gave a Dhamma lecture at a university but she saw much garbage on the way. She thought it was dirty but she didn't say anything. But when she ended her lecture, the audience gave her a round of applause.
Then Cheng Yen told them to please change their power (from two clapping hands) to separating garbage to help the world. One housewife did just that and now the foundation runs over 4,500 recycling stations throughout Taiwan.
The garbage separation plan started from only one housewife who listened to Cheng Yen and lived by her word.
Volunteers, young and old, are diligently separating garbage at a facility of the Tzu Chi Foundation with a deep down hope. They know that the scraps - when properly managed - can be turned into blankets to shield the underprivileged from the cold weather.
Last month, Moral Centre Thailand, an agency under the Culture Ministry, led Thai media to Taiwan to visit the Tzu Chi Foundation as part of a moral project management course.
"Tzu Chi makes a harmonious mixture of volunteers and people from various backgrounds including millionaires and the poor. Separating garbage is used to practice and develop the mind of volunteers to be humble and not shy away from labour. The work also cultivates an eco-friendly mind and makes the volunteers moderate in consumption," Kvish said.
A clear example was on the first day of the trip. All the participants received a cup to use during the whole four-day trip. They had to take care of the cup, use it and clean it, so that they did not make more garbage from disposable cups, plastic bottles or cans.
Chaweerat Kasetsoontorn, director of Moral Centre Thailand, said the garbage separation plan is different from others because every process has a meaning, such as treading on plastic bottles, which teaches everyone to be conscious.
Every step teaches Dhamma. And teaches people to save the environm
