In June 1908, what must have been a tremendous meteorite or swarm of meteorites fell in Siberia and blasted out of existence an area forest larger than Delaware. But it must have torn itself into tiny pieces, even into separate molecules of gas, for no trace of the meteorite itself has ever been found. There are several craters in a marsh where the thing struck, but exploration of the craters has not revealed any traces of solid material.
In Ungava, far northern Quebec, is the greatest crater ever known to have been gouged out of the earth. It is called Chubb Crater, after the man who brought it to the attention of scientists. No trace of the great meteor has been found.
