The lipid contents of Scenedesmus sp. LX1 and Chlorella sp. HQ in SE and mBG11 media were determined after 24 d of cultivation. Figure 5 shows that the lipid contents of both algae in the mBG11 medium were slightly enhanced compared with those in the SE medium. This phenomenon is consistent with a previous finding, in which nutrient deficiency is considered as an effective factor influencing the lipid content of algae [24,25]. Both algae exhibited a great potential for lipid accumulation, although the lipid content of Scenedesmus sp. LX1 was higher than that of Chlorella sp. HQ in both culture media. For instance, Scenedesmus sp. LX1 obtained a lipid content of 22.5% in the mBG11 medium, whereas Chlorella sp. HQ only obtained a lipid content of 17.1%.
