Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street. Fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” This famous quote was said by one of the most influential female fashion designers of the twentieth century, Coco Chanel. I chose this quote because I feel like it accurately illustrates how I feel about my own personal style and the style I see in others. Fashion, or even personal style to me isn’t about wearing what you see when you scroll through the women’s fashion section of Pinterest. It isn’t about going out each day dressed like you’re headed to the Metropolitan Opera. It isn’t about wearing what just walked off the cat-walk. It isn’t about these things if, and only if, it doesn’t represent you and what you are comfortable in. If you can afford what just walked off the cat-walk (and if you are able to afford that as a college student, I am incredibly envious of you) and you feel comfortable wearing those clothes, then by all means that is wonderful, that is you and that is your style and no one can take that away from you. However, if being comfortable to you means wearing a nice pair of leggings, a pair of cute boots, and a cute shirt, there isn’t anything wrong with that either. That is your style and it is a tangible representation of you.
As for myself, I dress every day in either a skirt or a dress. You will never catch me wearing pants unless I’m at my part-time job at the movie theatre or I’m being forced to do physical labor (and seeing as I want nothing to do with physical labor, that generally isn’t an issue.) I feel comfortable wearing dresses, skirts, obnoxious jewelry, bright patterns, blazers, cute blouses, and everything in between. It feels right to me. And I always have people always ask me why I always dress so “nicely” or if I ever go out in sweatpants or Norts. I always have to explain to them, that what I put on everyday isn’t an effort- it’s actually quite natural. I cannot start my morning routine without putting on something from my closet. If I’m in my shorts and t-shirt, it’s only because I’m studying in my room or about to sleep. It almost feels like I’m naked if I ever have to go out in shorts in a t-shirt because I don’t feel like I’m dressed. There are many times when I have to go to events and the dress is casual and I have no idea what I should wear because to me, casual is a dress and a cardigan; however, to others, that means jeans and a button-up blouse. Some people say that I look too professional for day-to-day wear, but honestly, I don’t know any different.
When I dress “nice,” I feel as if nothing can stop me and it gives me the motivation for the day. I feel confidant. And I’m not saying this to make you think that you have to wear what I wear, because if you did, you wouldn’t be you- you would be a different version of me. If you enjoy wearing Norts and a t-shirt, that is perfectly fine because that is you. To be anybody else shouldn’t be the way anyone should live their life. Honestly, sometimes I wish I could “bum it,” because I truly envy how a lot of girls can look so cute without any effort; unfortunately, when I try, I ultimately give up because it doesn’t look right on me and I do not pull it off like others.
