Apparatus: A thermostatically controlled, ventilated drying
oveg, capable of maintaining a temperature of 105°C within
i_3 C for a period of at.least 24 hours; precision balance;
sample container with a lid; dessicator.
Procedure: The rock specimen is weighed and put in the Sample
container, with the lid of the container open.and kept in the
oven. The specimen is regarded as "oven dried" when successive
weights of the specimen at intervals of 4 hours do not differ
by more than 0.1% of the specimen weight. To avoid the specimen absorbing
water inbetween drying and weighing, the container should be covered
with the lid and stored in a dessicator to cool.
