Synthetic seeds are defined as artificially encapsulated somaticembryos, shoot buds, cell aggregates, or any other tissue that canbe used for sowing as a seed and that possess the ability to convertinto a plant under in vitro or ex vitro conditions and that retain thispotential also after storage (Capuano et al., 1998). Encapsulation ofvegetative propagules offers an efficient and cost-effective systemfor clonal propagation of plant species (Singh et al., 2006a). In addi-tion, these encapsulated vegetative propagules can also be used forconservation of germplasm and exchange of axenic plant materialamong laboratories (Rai et al., 2008).
