The designer’s privileged entrée to the museum came about when he was commissioned to design a souvenir scarf for the store at the “Diaghilev and the Golden Age of the Ballets Russes” exhibition, which opens next week at the V&A. He assures us he’s not taking the ballet theme literally, but the juxtaposition of softness and structure he’s talking about chimes in with many conversations we’ve been having with many designers this season. Quite how this will work itself out in Erdem’s case remains to be seen, but trailing scarf details in the back of some of his dresses give an indication that this collection will come alive in motion.
