we believe that appropriate counsellor self-disclosure enables young people to feel more comfortable when self-disclosing to us. When a counsellor shares personal information with a young person the young person is implicitly invited to relate to the counsellor as an equal. They are likely to see the counsellor as a real person who has feeling and experiences which may have some similarity with their own. However, there do need to be some clear limits to counsellor self-disclosure. It is not appropriate or ethical for the counselling process to lead to undesirable closeness with client and over-involvement by the counsellor.
