More snow arriving today, up to 6 inches possible
March may mark the beginning of meteorological spring, but with up to half a foot of snow expected this weekend, winter is beginning to resemble a guest that doesn't know when to leave.
The approaching snow storm, which prompted a winter weather advisory from the National Weather Service, is expected to arrive late this afternoon or early this evening.
Areas across the region will see about 4 to 6 inches of snowfall, according to the advisory, which takes effect at 3 p.m. today and will last until 9 a.m. Sunday
Snow showers are expected later in the day Sunday, although accumulation in the city is projected to be only few tenths of an inch. Areas in Kakakee and Will counties could see more significant snowfall on Sunday, bringing their weekend accumulation totals to as many as 7 inches.
An extensive low pressure system is moving up the Ohio River Valley through Kentucky. A winter storm watch has been posted for central and southern Illinois and Indiana, warning of of 6 to 10 inches from the Bloomington south and a band of freezing rain and sleet and snow south of Interstate 70 downstate.
The question is how much snow will fall between Bloomington and Chicago.
The highs will only get into the 20s over the weekend, then dip into the teens Monday and Tuesday. There's a chance we could reach the freezing mark by Thursday.
The meteorological winter, which runs from December to February, is going down in the books as the third coldest and third snowiest on record since 1871. There hasn’t been one worse since 1978-79.
