11. Sequence word
There are a number of words that show the order of situations and events, in other words, sequence of situations. The most common reference words used are “the former” and “the latter”. Both of them imply the relations of situation, event, or person. For examples:
Simon and Laura came together; the latter wore the pink dress.
“the latter” refers to Laura because she is placed in the second sequence.
Some children get up early; others get up late. The former can have breakfast earlier than the latter.
In the sentence “the former” refers to “some children” while “the latter” refers to
“others”
