By population numbers, it is evident that Australia has been male dominate from the beginning (Lieberman, n.d.). Because of this, women have experienced prejudice and social differences among men. Men dominated all aspects of life in early Australian history, from family life to work and education, males were “better off” in the gender world. In fact, women were not even considered legal entities in the early 1800’s (Lieberman, n.d.). The early Australian inhabitants hunted and gathered, which defined distinctive roles for men and women in Australian heritage. The men would hunt the game, while the women stayed close to home and gathered. It seemed as though these women understood their position in society. A study conducted on women in poverty and South Australian Aborigine’s women showed, “they [girls] had a vast understanding of the roles ascribed to women and in particular, women’s work in the family situation. When the girls projected themselves into adult lives, these lives seemed to mirror the gender positions that they were already rehearsing as children” (Lieberman, n.d.). However, the roles that women played in society began to change as the economy revolutionized. Men began to work in the factories, removing them from the family unit. This separation from family changed the role of men in Australian society. Man's role was defined as follows: “strong, silent and competitive, a provider and protector for your family, get on with the job and don’t complain” (Lieberman, n.d.). Australian masculinity began to reshape when men left to work in the factories. The new definition of masculinity has caused some Australian men to become frustrated. While some men face cultural issues, the native Aborigines community of men experience cultural separation. Even though the role of men changed throughout Australian history, women still experienced inequality. Women may now achieve an education, but they still experience hostility in the workplace even with a degree in hand. In fact, women do not usually move up to high-positions in their careers. Research found, “The proportion of employed males in full time employment is 89 percent with only 11 percent in part time positions; this is in contrast to the proportions for employed females with only 58 percent of employed females working in full time positions, with 42 percent working part time” (Bami, 2010). Unfortunately, the Australian government consists of mostly men, and the likeliness of these politicians to change the inequality that women face in Australia is very low. However, Julia Gillard was recently elected as Prime Minister of Australia. Because of this, women may have a chance of improved equality. Gillard is pushing that women be judged on their merits and not their gender (Bami, 2010). Overall, women are still struggling to achieve complete equality based on hard work rather than their gender. With some improvements, women are hopeful of the future with Gillard as Prime Minister.
