Humor, which is often different from society, began to cross cultural bridges when movies were introduced. Movies gave people a view of normal or funny situations from other societies. One important person in the humor business was Charlie Chaplin.
Charlie Chaplin was born in London in 1889.His parents were poor and his childhood was very difficult. As a boy, he had to sell flowers on the street to help his parents. When his parents separated in the 1890’s, Charlie’s mother had to try to raise her children alone. During this time she became ill and had to be put into a hospital. Charlie and his half brother Sydney were placed in a home for poor children. While they were living there, they practiced the songs their mother had taught them. It was probably here that Charlie’s career as an entertainer began.
Charlie grew older, left the home and started working as a dancer and actor. He worked with a group that put on shows in Europe and America. In America, he started making movies and he started to become famous for his funny characters. Everybody loved Charlie Chaplin.
But his personal life was not as happy as his movies. While the world was laughing, Charlie was often crying. He was a shy person, who lacked self-confidence. He had some bad times in his life.
Even though he is dead, Charlie Chaplin’s movies are still popular all over the world. Thanks to the man called “The Little Clown”, millions of people have had the chance to see the funny side of life.
