Figure 2 (page 3) shows a modification of this design, where the HPA has been moved
outdoors and installed directly on or adjacent to the antenna. This increasingly common
concept reduces the losses in the high power microwave signal between the HPA and the
antenna, which can be prohibitive in some cases. In any event, it does nothing to
eliminate the number of physically separate equipment boxes or the duplicated functions
in the chain.
