Numerical Rating Scale
A commonly used clinical measure of pain is the NRS. It has been used to validly and reliably assess pain (Paice & Cohen 1997). Patients are asked to indicate the intensity of pain by
reporting a number that best represents it. The NRS is easy to administer verbally in a clinical setting and is a familiar clinical tool. Patients were also asked to verbally rate their pain ‘on a scale from 0 to 10, with 0 equal to no pain and 10 equal to worst possible pain’ (Flaherty 1996, Williamson & Hoggart 2005).
