Biocides are chemical or physical agents with a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity. They are commonly used as environmental disinfectants or antiseptics for skin decontamination.1 and 2 Biocides have long been the mainstay of infection control strategy in clinical environments. However, in recent years, it has been shown that microbes are able to withstand biocides when they live in the biofilm phase.3 As such, Maillard stated that the efficacy of biocides in healthcare facilities has to be questioned in order to ascertain the widespread emergence of biocide resistance of nosocomial bacterial species.4
