The first reaction scheme (model1) is similar to that for methyl chloride synthesis and described in detail (Schmidtetal., 2013). This model assumes three main steps for there action (listed below). The step 1, ethyl chloride formation directly from ethanol and HCl, is the main rate determining step (RDS), step 2 describes the formation of the main by-product , diethyl ether, form ethanol and, finally, step 3, describes the reaction of diethyl ether with HCl to form ethyl chloride.
