Because of the inherent limitations of plant lead detection methods (2.17 mg/kg), this study could not ensure that the lead concentration in the corn kernels was less than that set by standards limiting the lead content in food consumed by humans (0.2 mg/kg, fresh weight). However, the corn kernel lead concentration adhered to the limitations stipulated in the EU animal feed standards: 11.4 mg kg-1 in general feedstuffs, and 34 mg/kg in green fodder material with a 12% moisture content (Meers et al., 2010).
