Figures 7 and 8 illustrate the variation between Young’s modulus at failure (Ef), surcharge and
cement content for both kaolinite and bentonite samples. Note that Young’s modulus at failure was calculated
using:Both clays display a trend of increasing stiffness with increasing surcharge and cement content. The
relationships for both clays indicate a decreasing magnitude of increase in stiffness as cement contents increase.
For kaolinite with 15% cement and bentonite with 40% cement, increasing the surcharge load from zero to
120kPa and to zero to 40kPa, induces 80% and 60% increase in the Young’s Modulus at Failure (Ef),
respectively. Figures 9 and 10 illustrate the relationship between saturated unit weights, surcharges and cement
contents for both kaolinite and bentonite samples.
