A study was undertaken to determine the effects of acetylsalicylic acid
(ASA) on the development of injury-induced atherosclerosis in swine. Treatment of
mini-pigs with 30 mg/kg of ASA twice daily for 4 weeks significantly inhibited
intimal thickening caused by 2 consecutive balloonings. The effect was accompanied
by a 30o% reduction in aortic collagen. ASA thus appears to exert a protective
effect in injury-induced atherosclerosis.
