Both know-how, human resources and quality should be understood as being complex
(multidimensional) and dynamic, which implies that they are best understood from an
intertemporal perspective. Thus innovation and training appear to have substantial scale and
option return effects (**) in the sense that the more training is done, the easier it is to further
increase its level. Similarly, the more science based and/or innovation experienced companies
are the easier it will be for these firms to continuously research and innovate.
This leads to a second hypothesis which suggests that firms who have already obtained high
levels of quality (in terms of complexity) and hence have a more highly trained workforce
