International assignments offer adventure to the assignee. Expatriates can move to a new country, experience a new culture, and grow personally in adjusting to the new environment (Richardson & McKenna, 2002). Organization-assigned expatriation assignments are lucrative for the expatriates, in that a number financial incentives and benefits may be offered by the organization in order to entice the expatriate to move (Dowling et al.,2008). Expatriation assignments provide individuals with the opportunity to extend their role and responsibilities in the organization. This personal career development pathway motivates individuals to move internationally in order to increase their organizational knowledge and promotional opportunities in the organization (Dickmannet al., 2008; Dohertyet al., 2011). Indeed Linehan and Scullion (2001) suggest career advancement is the primary reason why individuals partake in international assignments.
