The first ever joint thematic debate on the role of partnerships for the implementation of the post 2015 development agenda is being held in New York on Wednesday.
The meeting involves the UN General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), two of the main organs of the United Nations.
The UN says that with less than 800 days remaining, efforts must be intensified for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals to eradicate extreme poverty by 2015.
One of the eight anti-poverty goals agreed by world leaders in the year 2000 is to build partnership for development.
Afaf Konja is Spokesperson for the President of the General Assembly.
"This is a forum on partnerships that, if you will, walks the talk on promoting greater global partnerships through partnering. The event will focus on the scaling up on all forms of cooperation while providing a platform for member states and, of course, other stakeholders, to address how strengthened global partnerships, including the emerging role of innovative multi stakeholder partnerships can enhance sustainable development and, of course the over-arching process of the post-2015 framework.”
The two-day event is being attended by senior diplomats, United Nations officials, representatives of the private sector and civil society.
The meeting takes place as discussions are now focusing on sustainable development goals that are due to be implemented after 2015.
