He sighed again and continued to watch her from a distance. There weren’t many things that bothered (y/n). He was a pretty easy going guy. But every day he was forced to watch humans treat Faunus as though they were no better than animals. There was one Faunus in particular that got picked on here at Beacon. Velvet. She was in most of his classes and he had to watch as she was attacked and picked on by the humans who had some strange superiority complex.
The ass Cardin and his goon friends kept pulling on her ears. (y/n) would have loved to be her hero for once but he just didn't have the guts. That was something else that bothered him. He felt as though he was too weak to do anything for anyone. That was why he came to Beacon. He wanted to get stronger, braver, enough so that he could help people just like Velvet.
No one knew this side of him though. Everyone, even Velvet, believed that he was one of the bravest students at the school. It wasn't a bad reputation…it was just an untrue one. The only time (y/n) didn't like this reputation was in moments like these. How could he let people call him brave if he just sat and watched as Velvet was tormented every day by these tools? He knew he could set aside his fears. For her.
All he did was stand up and walk over to her. That's all it took. Cardin and his asshat teammates wouldn’t bother her when he was around. His reputation was preceding him. It was something he was thankful for. They shot a few swears at him and then they left. (y/n) was rather thankful. He wasn't really in the mood to cause a scene.
"Hey thanks," Velvet said softly. She couldn't make herself look up at him. Often at times those who came to her rescue only did so that they could scorn her further. She didn't need anymore of that. She didn't want anymore of that. It was hard enough being a Faunus in the first place. But having to deal with all of these punks messing with her head and her heart all the time wasn't helping.
"No problem," (y/n) replied just as softly. He would never tell anyone, but he was quite shy around girls. But that didn't mean he wasn't smooth. "I just couldn't stand around and watch a pretty girl get hurt."
"You don't have to call me pretty," she replied quietly. Velvet figured he was just trying to mess around with her like all the other people that the school. It was rare to find someone who was truly kind.
"I'm just being honest," he replied with a smirk. (y/n) didn't realize that he wasn't being as charismatic as usual.
Velvet nodded in his direction and then left the room. (y/n) couldn't be proud of himself. He couldn't believe that he just let her go. He wanted to use this as a chance to sit and eat lunch with her and maybe get to know her. Velvet was an adorable enigma. She was quiet, so the only thing most people knew about her was that she was a Faunus. She was often the victim of Cardin and his friends' bullying.
It was out of character for (y/n) to chase after anyone. Most people thought it was because he didn't care enough to. He knew it was because he was pretty shy when it came to girls. So people stopped to watch as he followed Velvet down the hall.
