Metal nitrates are oxysalts and, as a group, have a wide range of hazards. Common to many of them, however, is the fact they are oxidizers and are heat and shock sensitive. When heated, they will melt, releasing oxygen, which will increase the combustion process. Molten nitrates react violently with organic materials. When solid streams of water are used fire suppression , steam explosions may occur upon contact with the molten materials. Nitrates can be dangerous oxidizers and will explode if contaminated, heated, or shocked. Most nitrates have similar properties.
