Mood is important for the current study for two reasons: (a) mood has been found to influence reading comprehension (Bohn- Gettler & Rapp, 2011; Egidi & Gerrig, 2009) and (b) environ- mental factors have been found to influence mood (Loewen & Suedfeld, 1992). In their comprehensive study of environment, mood, and cognition, Hygge and Knez (2001) reviewed theoretical models suggesting that mood may mediate the relationship be- tween environment and cognition, but found little evidence for mediated effects; rather they proposed that relationships between emotion and environment, and environment and cognition, may operate independently. Thus, further evidence that mood, specif- ically different aspects of negative and positive mood, may be influenced by environment would be useful in furthering under- standing as to the role that mood and environment play in class- room learning and adjustment.
